  8. commstalk-4D was formerly released and sold in the USA under the name "4DCK" and "4D Communications Kit".  References in the sample files and the documentation provided with this demo refer in several places to "4DCK" and the 4D Communications Kit, which can be read synonymously as "CT4D" and "commstalk - 4D".

  10. 1. INSTALLING THE DEMO SOFTWARE

This diskette contains a self-extracting archive.  Double-click it, select a hard-disk on which to install the software when the dialog appears, and a folder called "CT4D Demo Kit" will be created containing all of the necessary files for evaluation of CT4D.  You will need approximately 3 mb of space available on your disk expand the archive.  Please note that the CT4D external must be installed into the demo databases provided, or ones that you create for evaluation.  Installers for each of 4D 3.x and 2.x are supplied on this diskette.

We have provided the first several chapters of the full documentation on this diskette in the form of printable Glue™ files.  We recommend that you print them and follow along with the installation instructions provided there and the tutorial.  The tutorial and the tutorial database will provide a good foundation in the operational concepts of CT4D.

  18. 3. HIGH-LEVEL INTERFACE
  19.

The High-Level interface is provided as a separate code library in the full product, but is not provided in that form in this demo.  Instead, we invite you to explore the COMB demo and its code and move relevant code bits from it that you wish to use in your test databases, using the 4D code-mover.  From this sample you should be able to get the idea and find sufficient useful portions to develop your own test code.

  22. 4. MEMORY CONSIDERATIONS

When calling the CTB Tools dialogs from CT4D, memory usage is at its peak.  More than likely, the standard memory allocation for 4D (1.5 mb) will be inadequate.  If you experience difficulty, first put the memory allocation higher in the "Get Info" dialog for 4th Dimension - preferably in .5 mb increments.  Supplying additional memory when using CT4D normally solves any problems you may encounter.

  52. This version (1.1x3) of the CT4D demo is compatible with 4D versions 3.0.5 and v3.1. An older version of the CT4D demo software (4DCK v1.0.2) is also included on this disk; it may be used with 4D version 2.2.x.

  56.                        THE COMMS TOOLBOX (CTB) and COMMS TOOLBOX TOOLS

All the files you need to install the CTB are included (Folder "CTB Installer files"). If you are a user of System 7 (or later) you do NOT need the files in this folder.  However, whether you use System 6 or System 7, you MUST place at least one "connection", one "terminal" and one "file transer" tool (from the "CTB Basic Conn Set 1.1.1" folder) into the Extensions Folder (located in your System Folder).  CT4D will not function properly without at least one of each of these types of tools available for its use.

  61. To install the CTB onto systems running System 6, please follow these instructions:

  63. 1. Install the CT4D folder on your hard drive, following the instructions in the manual.
  64.  
  65. 2. Format a blank (800K) disk, naming it 'Communications 1'.
  66.  
  67. 3. Check the name of the newly formatted disk: if it is wrong, the installation will fail!
  68.  
  69. 4. Open the 'CTB Installer Files' folder.
  70.  
  71. 5. Copy the four files in the 'CTB Installer Files' folder to the new 'Communications 1' disk. Make sure the four files are copied to the outer level of the disk, and that they are not hidden inside any folders, or the installation procedure will fail.

  73. 6. Run the 'Installer' program on the new 'Communications 1' disk. It will ask you where you want the CTB to be installed.
  74.  
  75. 7. If the Installer complains that it cannot find the 'Communications 1' disk then you probably got the name of the disk wrong. Go back to step 3 and try again.

  77. 8. Install the CTB tools. (This step also applies if you have System 7). Under System 6 the tools go in the 'Communications Folder' in your system folder; under System 7 they go into the extensions folder.
